What Happens When an Effect Says "Instead"?

Change the event before it happens, then carry out the replacement rather than the original event.

The short answer

An effect saying "instead" changes what is about to happen. Apply it before that event happens. Do the , not both outcomes. It does not create a separate chance to react in the middle.

How it works

Follow the replacement's conditions exactly. If more than one applies to the same event, the affected card's controller chooses their order. If a player is affected, that player chooses; for an uncontrolled battlefield, the turn player chooses. Each replacement can apply only once to that event and the events replacing it.

A replaced event did not happen, so it cannot trigger an ability looking for that event. This does not automatically cancel later instructions: an instruction that specifically requires the original action, such as "if you do," is different from one that simply refers to the affected card.

Prevention replaces damage with a smaller amount; replaces an event with nothing. Replacements affecting combat damage are accounted for during damage assignment.

Example

Tactical Retreat

An effect would kill your unit, but a tells you to heal, exhaust and it instead. Carry out those instructions. The unit did not die, so its does not happen.

Spell

Tactical Retreat

[Reaction] (Play any time, even before spells and abilities resolve.) Choose a friendly unit. The next time it would die this turn, heal it, exhaust it, and recall it instead. (Send it to base. This isn't a move.)
