Scoring

Scoring Across Turns

Follow Conquer and Hold through several turns, including the Final Point in free-for-all and team games.

What you’ll learn

  • Each player has one scoring opportunity per battlefield per turn, shared between Conquer and Hold.
  • Hold is checked at the Beginning scoring step, after earlier Beginning effects.
  • Conquer’s Final Point restriction also applies at or above the Victory Score.

Understand the concept

Each player keeps their own record of the battlefields they have scored during the current turn. rewards taking control; rewards keeping control into your Beginning Phase. For you, both share one scoring opportunity per battlefield per turn. An opponent can score that same battlefield during the same turn; their score does not erase or fill your own history.

In 2v2, the -occupation exemption for a Final Point from Conquer applies only during your turn or your teammate’s turn. During an opponent’s turn, use the normal requirement to score every battlefield that turn.

Turn one: taking and retaking a battlefield

Example - A starts at 3 points. During A’s turn, A takes control of battlefield X and Conquers it, reaching 4. A later loses X, then takes it back during that same turn. A has already scored X this turn, so this second control change does not score it again or trigger another Conquer scoring ability there.

During B’s turn, the per-turn record is different. If A legally takes control of a battlefield then and has not scored it in B’s turn, A can Conquer it. “Per turn” is not “only during your own turn”, and changing turns does not itself move units or transfer control.

Compare the players - During A’s turn, A scores X, then B legally takes X and scores it for B. A retakes X: A cannot score it again because A already did. B’s score and A’s score are separate records for the same battlefield and turn.

Next turn: Hold uses the scoring step

At the start of A’s next turn, Awaken, when you ready your cards, happens first. Beginning abilities then before the scoring step. A Holds battlefields A still controls when that step is reached, scoring each eligible one. Losing control before the scoring step means no Hold there.

Continue the example - A reaches the Beginning scoring step still controlling X. A Holds X and moves from 4 to 5 points. If A loses X later in that turn and retakes it, A cannot also Conquer it for another score: Hold already used X’s scoring opportunity. Hold and Conquer are different events, but they share the limit.

Final Point: Conquer needs the complete turn

When a Conquer would gain a point while you are one point below your mode’s or already at or above it, you must have scored every battlefield that turn. Otherwise, draw a card instead of gaining that Conquer point. The battlefield was still scored, and its eligible scoring abilities still trigger. Hold points are not subject to this Conquer restriction.

Standard example - At 7 points with two battlefields, Conquer X first. You have not scored Y this turn, so draw a card and stay at 7. Conquer Y later in that turn. You have now scored both and gain the point to reach 8. Winning is checked at and also requires more points than every opponent.

More players means more battlefields to track

In three-player free-for-all, use all three battlefields; in four-player free-for-all, use all four. The normal Conquer Final Point test asks whether you scored all of them in the same turn. Other players’ scoring does not fill your own checklist.

Example - In a three-player game, you begin your turn at 7 and Hold X to reach 8, while an opponent already has 8. You do not win the tie. Conquering Y draws a card if Z is still unscored by you that turn. After you score Z as well, that Conquer can raise you to 9. The win check still compares your total with every opponent.

Team play: control and units present are different

In 2v2, points are shared but battlefield control is individual. Your team cannot score a battlefield that your teammate controlled during your Beginning scoring step, for the rest of that turn. You cannot ask your teammate to leave and then Conquer it for another score.

The team Final Point exception uses a different test: it excludes battlefields occupied by your ally during that scoring step from the set you must score. Controlled and occupied are not interchangeable. Example - Your ally occupies and controls X at that step. X cannot be scored by your team that turn and is excluded from your Final Point checklist. Score the remaining required battlefields in the same turn; sharing the team’s points does not let you share all players’ scoring events.
