At the start of the Main Phase, pools empty before start-of-Main-Phase effects happen. Resources added by those effects remain available afterward. At the end of the turn, pools empty after end-of-turn effects. You can use resources during those effects before any leftovers disappear.
In practice
Example
During your Main Phase, an effect Adds 3 Energy and you spend 2 to play a card. The remaining 1 Energy stays available for another payment that turn. If you leave it unspent, it disappears when the pools empty at the end of the turn.
