Dependent Keywords During Resolution
Recheck Level and other dependent text as XP, control and events change, even during one resolving effect.
Guide overview
What you’ll learn
- Recheck dependent text during resolution, rather than at its end only.
- Level uses the current controller’s current XP.
- A trigger needs active text at the event; later activation is not retroactive.

Understand the concept
A Dependent KeywordA keyword, such as Legion or Level, that gives a condition for the following ability to be active.View in Glossary makes the text after it work only while its conditions are true. It is not permanently unlocked once a threshold has been reached. If a resolving effect gains XPA personal resource a player gains and spends as instructed. Keep the total visible; teammates do not share XP.View in Glossary , spends XP or changes a card’s ControllerThe player who currently controls a game object and makes the choices assigned to that controller. Control is established differently for battlefields and other objects, and need not match ownership.View in Glossary , the player who controls it, that can switch dependent text on or off before the effect’s next instruction.
A threshold is checked as the total changes
LevelA keyword that makes the following text active while the card's controller has at least the stated amount of XP. Falling below that amount makes the text inactive again.View in Glossary N uses the current XP of the player controlling that card. XP is a separate experience total, not your victory points. Gaining enough XP turns on the governed text immediately; spending below the threshold turns it off. Other printed abilities are not switched off merely because Level fails.
Gustwalker has HuntA unit keyword that triggers when it Conquers or Holds. When the trigger resolves, its controller gains the stated XP. Hunt defaults to 1; multiple Hunt values on a unit add together.View in Glossary 2 and Level 3 text giving +1 Might and GankingGanking is a keyword that allows a unit to move from one Battlefield directly to another with its Standard Move.View in Glossary , permission to make a Standard Move between battlefields. Suppose you control it with 1 XP. Its Hunt resolves and gives you 2 XP: 1 → 3. The Level text becomes active at that point. If you later spend 1 XP, 3 → 2, its Level bonus and Ganking become inactive again. XP is personal even when your team shares points.
Card example
Gustwalker
Hunt changes your XP on resolution. Level then checks whether that current total reaches 3.
Unit
Gustwalker
[Hunt 2] (When I conquer or hold, gain 2 XP.) [Level 3][>] I have +1 [Might] and [Ganking]. (While you have 3+ XP, get the effect. A [Ganking] unit can move from battlefield to battlefield.)
One effect can cross the threshold twice
Resolve instructions in order, updating conditions as each action happens. There is no permission to insert an ordinary action between instructions merely because an ability has become available. Triggered AbilityAn ability started by a stated event or time, usually introduced by "when" or "at." It goes on the Chain when its condition is met.View in Glossary , which happen when a specified event occurs, can be created while another effect is resolving. They wait for the appropriate processing afterwards.
Illustrative sequence - You have 2 XP and a Level 3 passive bonus. An effect instructs you to gain 1 XP, then spend 1 XP, then examine the unit’s Might. Gain: 2 → 3, so the bonus applies. Spend: 3 → 2, so it stops applying. The final instruction uses the unit without that bonus. Do not freeze its Level state for the whole resolution.
Triggered text must be active at the event
A dependent triggered ability must be active when its event is evaluated. If it becomes active at the same moment its trigger condition is fulfilled, it can trigger. Gaining the condition later does not replay an earlier event. All dependent conditions on that ability must be true.
Compare two orders - With 2 XP, a Level 3 ability watching you Buff a unit is inactive. If an effect Buffs the unit first and gains 1 XP afterwards, that earlier Buff does not trigger the ability. If it gains 1 XP first and then Buffs the unit, the ability is active for that Buff and can trigger. A simultaneous activation-and-trigger event is eligible too, when the event itself supports both changes.
Control changes and already-created abilities
Changing the controller changes whose XP is checked. A Level 3 card can lose its bonus when it moves from a player with 5 XP to a player with 1 XP, without either player gaining or spending XP. A teammate’s XP is not added to the new controller’s total.
An Activated AbilityAn ability you choose to use by paying the cost before its colon. Its effect is written after the colon.View in Glossary , one you choose to use by paying its cost, already put on the ChainAn off-board zone that holds cards and abilities during the process of playing them. Cards and abilities on it are public information.View in Glossary as a pending item continues through the play procedure even if its dependent condition becomes false. Pending means it is waiting for the remaining choices, costs and legality checks needed to finalize it. That does not authorize a new activation of the now-inactive text. An ability with Level and Legion also needs both conditions; enough XP cannot substitute for another card being finalized that turn.
Keep in mind
Key points
- Recheck dependent text during resolution, rather than at its end only.
- Level uses the current controller’s current XP.
- A trigger needs active text at the event; later activation is not retroactive.
- Losing a condition does not erase an already-created activated ability.
