Showdowns and the Chain
Once the first item resolves, must the entire Chain finish without any more responses?
A Chain can receive new Reactions between resolutions
RiftPal explanation · Answer first
Actually
No. Resolve the newest item completely. If items remain, players receive fresh PriorityThe right to take a legal action now. Only one player can have Priority at a time, and having it does not remove a card or ability's timing restrictions.View in Glossary opportunities and can add legal ReactionA timing keyword that includes Action's permissions and also permits a card or activated ability while a Chain is waiting. RiftPal explanation
Why it matters
Passing Priority once does not agree to resolve the whole ChainAn off-board zone that holds cards and abilities during the process of playing them. Cards and abilities on it are public information.View in Glossary . After an item finishes and its results are handled, the controller of the newest waiting item gets Priority first.
You cannot interrupt an item halfway through its instructions with an unrelated Reaction. Respond at the next legal opportunity instead.
In practice
At the table
A Reaction finishes and draws you another Reaction while an older spell still waits. Once you receive Priority, you may play the newly drawn card on that same Chain if its targets and other requirements are legal.
